Application Criteria for a 2022 HopScotch Break

The Holidays

  • HopScotch's Respite Centre accommodates 12 children per week; 6 boys and 6 girls, or 12 children of the same sex.
  • All organisations must provide at least 3 members of staff/volunteers to act as carers for the children during the holiday. They must know the children well, and they will be responsible for them during the break. They must have childcare qualifications/experience and have gone through Disclosure Scotland checks.

The Children

  • Children must have no other chance of a holiday in 2022.
  • Children must be between 7-12 years at the time of the holiday.
  • Children must really want to go on holiday, and should be assessed as being able to cope with a week away from home.
  • Children must not have been on a HopScotch holiday before.
  • Children are not eligible if they have a record of violence or other problems which could place other children and members of staff at risk.

Eligibility Criteria

Any child is eligible for a HopScotch break if they have not had another holiday in that calendar year and they need respite from their current situation, such as:

  • Children who are experiencing some form of deprivation, discrimination, abuse, family crisis or breakdown.
  • Children who regularly take on the responsibilities of caring for another family member.
  • Children of homeless families or children who live in sub-standard housing.
  • Children of asylum seekers, refugees, and other minority groups.
  • Children of parent(s) who suffer from long-term illness, disability or addiction.
  • Children who are socially isolated.
  • Children of families who are on low income or income support.
  • Cared-for children.
  • Children who have experienced bereavement.
